Meet the Board - Justin Alford

July 31, 2020

2 minute Read

CarJustin Alford is a third-generation car wash professional with Benny’s Car Wash, based in Louisiana. Alford has a degree from Louisiana State University and has been in the industry (officially) since 1989. His youth was filled with quality family time at the car wash as Benny’s became one of the pioneers of the Express Exterior model in the United States. He took time away from the family-run operation to answer a few questions.

Q: What does an average day look like for you?

Like most car washers, my days are full of a little of everything. I really enjoy going to our locations and getting to know our associates. However, I do whatever it takes: accounting, wiring, plumbing, wiping cars, fixing gas pumps, etc. … We are a hands-on-family-run operation 24/7, 365.

Q: What keeps you coming back every day?

Working with the people is what I enjoy the most. But, getting to work with my dad everyday is my favorite. It is an honor to learn from him and spend time with him.

Q: What do you think car wash professionals need to be watching out for, and paying attention to right now?

The amount of car washes being built is just crazy; the market will get over built. We have seen highs and lows in the industry throughout the years, and we are in a car wash building boom right now. It will slow down one day.

Q What has been your biggest learning from the car wash industry?

The growth in the industry over the years has been great to see.

Q What trends or potential trends are you watching in the industry?

I’m always watching the private equity groups ante the large chains developing in the industry.

Q: What are you most excited about that ICA is working on?

I am excited about how large the annual The Car Wash Show is getting.

Q: What do you do when you’re not ‘on the clock’? What do you do to refill your tank?

I am always on the clock. We never stop thinking about car washing. But I enjoy spending time with my family.

Q: Tell us something we’d be surprised to learn about you.

I was a drummer for many years. Even marched and played snare drum in the LSU Golden Band from Tigerland. I still enjoy marching in the LSU alumni band with my daughter who is currently in the marching band.

We have seen highs and lows in the industry throughout the years, and we are in a car wash building boom right now.”
