Meet the Board - David Begin

October 2, 2016

3 minute Read

David Begin recently took time to answer a few questions about how he got into the car wash industry and what trends he’s paying attention to. Begin is the new president of the International Carwash Association (ICA) Board of Directors and currently owns two washes in Colorado with plans for a third underway.

How did you get into the car wash business?

I was in software sales and training and extensively traveled the country and the world. My kids were growing up, and I felt as if I was missing out on their lives. I wanted to transition from a corporate job to a local, small business. I was always intrigued with the workings of a car wash and had interest in it. I started looking for sites and three years later, we had a contract on a piece of land.

As you’ve been in the business, what have you learned along the way?

I have learned that the car wash business is harder than it looks. In order to run a good business, you need to be good at many things. Hiring and training employees is one of the most important skills you can develop. Also, developing good operational systems that your employees can easily follow.

What trends are you watching in the industry?

I’m a technology geek, so any technologies that help me understand customer and operational trends. I like portable technologies that make it easier for managers and employees to do their jobs, such as automated maintenance and task management systems. The entire field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to fundamentally change the way we operate our business in the next 5–10 years.

What do you think (ICA) car wash owners/operators need to be focused on right now?

Two things. First, developing and defining your value proposition to the marketplace. With increased competition, you and your team need to have a clear understanding of what you offer to the marketplace. You don’t need every customer; just those who love what you do. Second, you need to develop a good hiring and training program. Employees are the lifeblood of your business, and they will make or break you.

What should car wash professionals know about ICA and its board?

ICA is focused on its strategic plan to bring networking, education and advocacy opportunities to its members. ICA board members and staff are deeply committed to its members and the car wash industry. We are developing programs to help car wash owner understand emerging technologies in the automotive industry as well as provide comprehensive educational opportunities for owners and their employees.

What do you do in your down time?

I live in Colorado, so I like to do anything outdoors. I love to ski, fly fish, and I took up road cycling a few years ago and love riding with friends who are also in the car wash industry. I also have a small plane, so flying through the mountains of Colorado is a special treat.
