Ask Champ - New Social Media App

Ask Champ - New Social Media App

I’ve been seeing a lot of scuttle about a new social media app called Clubhouse. Do I need to be figuring out a way to get my business presence secured here? What exactly is it?

—Socially Anxious

I get it. It’s hard enough to find time to TweetBookGramLink. And creating content to go across increasing numbers of platforms, while managing online reviews across the interwebs is more than a full-time job.

Fortunately, I don’t think you need to worry about needing to do much with your company presence on Clubhouse. So far, it’s not shaping up to be something that consumers are going to use in that way. But I do recommend you get at least casually familiar with the app, if for no other reason than to be ready to leverage it if you need to. Who knows … you might pick up a little personal development via the app along the way.

So, what is it? Clubhouse is an audio only social networking app that’s sort of a modern-day party line system. You remember those right? Maybe not. Let’s try another explanation.

Basically, it’s akin to walking down the halls at a conference and popping in and out of sessions. Depending on your interests, you can find rooms dedicated to startups, fitness, social issues, fishing, sports … car washing. All manner of things. Once you find a room that sounds interesting, you can enter as a listener, and depending on the room you can raise your virtual hand to be invited to ask questions or to join the faux stage as a speaker.

Right now, this app exists in an invitation-only beta phase for iPhone users. The app has been growing quickly in popularity, which means that we are also going to start seeing competition for other audio networking options. For example, Facebook is actually already working on a competitor to the platform. Just like it developed its own version of Snapchat stories.

Long story short … reserve your username now. But I don’t think you have to worry about trying to manage a presence for your business. If you find yourself really getting into it, it can be a great way for you to grow your other social profiles in Instagram and Twitter by bringing value to the conversations you engage in.
